Frequently asked questions
When do I need a commercial invoice?
For most international shipments of goods that are sold, and often for gifts and samples too. Carriers such as DHL, FedEx and UPS ask for it on dutiable shipments. Postal services usually use a customs form (CN22/CN23) but may also request an invoice.
How do I describe goods?
Be specific: what it is, what it is made of and what it is used for – for example “Cotton T-shirt, women’s, knitted” rather than “clothes”. Vague descriptions cause customs delays.
What is an HS code?
The international Harmonized System code that classifies goods. The first 6 digits are the same worldwide. You can look codes up in your destination country’s tariff database.
Does this calculate duties?
No. Duties and taxes depend on the destination country. This form only records the declared value, which customs uses to calculate them.
